I Need a NASCAR Driver

Eenie, meenie, minie mo
Catch a driver by the toe
If he hollers, let him go
Eenie, meenie, minie mo.

My Crew Chief told me to pick the very best one and...

My favourite driver is and will always be Jeff Burton.  There is nothing that will ever change that fact.  But he is no longer racing.  So how does one go about picking a new driver?  For some it's quite easy.  For others... not so much.  There are those fans who only cheer for drivers who drive a certain make of car.  There are some who are loyal to a particular racing organization.  There are some who favour a certain number or a family name.  Sometimes I wish it was an easy choice for me just like those fans.

During the entire 2014 season I was convinced that I didn't have a full time driver.  But that may not be entirely true.   In 2009, I decided that I should have a back up driver just in case something happened to my primary driver.  This way I would have a driver to cheer for during the race.  Since I had just taken notice of a certain Crew Chief, Chad Knaus of the Lowe's 48 team, it seemed only logical to go with his driver Jimmie Johnson as the back up driver.  I also may have noticed a brash young driver named Brad Keselowski.  But we'll get to him later.

So for a few years, it was 31/48 and life was good.  Then it all changed in 2013 when the news came out that Jeff Burton would not be racing in 2014 even though his contract wasn't up until after the end of the 2014 season. Sponsorship issues was the reason stated.  And Burton fans suddenly found themselves wondering what to do after Jeff stopped racing.  I guess it was harder to take since it was near the end of the season and it was the last thing expected.  Looking back it might have been easier to accept if the announcement came at the beginning of the season.  In this I envy Gordon fans... at least they have a full year to prepare themselves.

So I found myself lacking focus in 2014 for the NASCAR season.  Part of me wanted to keep watching but it just wasn't the same anymore.  Every time I saw the 31 car I would be reminded that Jeff Burton is no longer driving full time and I would tear up.  The only thing that kept me watching was two Crew Chiefs... Chad Knaus and Paul Wolfe.  But as I have said before, NASCAR is a driver-centric sport.  It's extremely hard to watch without a favourite driver.  So the choices were to pick a new driver or to stop watching.  Actually, not watching was really not a choice.  And now after thinking about it, I really don't have to pick another driver because... I already have a driver.  I just had to accept it as fact.  There was a reason I picked a back up driver all those years ago... and that reason has come to pass.

The easy thing to do would be to move Jimmie to primary driver.  After all he was chosen as back up driver back in 2009.  Shouldn't it just be an automatic thing then that the back up takes over as primary once the primary no longer races.  One would think so but... this is where I throw a monkey wrench into the whole plan.  And that wrench's name would be Paul Wolfe.  Wait... what?!?  Yes, I said Paul Wolfe... the Crew Chief for Brad Keselowski.  How does he figure into this one?  Shouldn't this just be about the drivers?  It would make things much easier.  But then I wouldn't be honest with myself and that is a bit important.  Paul has managed to capture my attention in a relatively short time.  I barely noticed him in 2012.  And now I am listening to both Chad and Paul during the races.  So it's not only a decision based on drivers but also based on Crew Chiefs.

Now if I had to decide between Crew Chiefs... well, that makes things a bit more easy.  It's Chad Knaus that would come out on top.  He's the first Crew Chief I noticed so many years ago.  He is and will always be my favourite Crew Chief.  Paul Wolfe will just have to wait his turn... and so will his driver.  And that brings me to the final decision... Jimmie Johnson as primary driver with Brad Keselowski as back up driver.  It does not matter to me that they race for two different racing organizations.  Nor do I have a car manufacturer loyalty to take into consideration.  So the whole Chevy vs Ford isn't important.  I still really don't know how people decide on a car manufacturer loyalty.  But that is an issue for a different day.

Oh... and I may have noticed another driver.  That would be Kyle Larson.

2015: The Year of The Crew Chief

First of all I would like to declare 2015 to be "The Year of the Crew Chief".  The Crew Chief as in Chad Knaus... 6 time Championship Crew Chief of the Lowe's 48 team.  I'm not exactly sure what this means but I like the sound of it.  And now onto the rest of the post...

Another new year is now upon us and traditionally this means new year's resolutions.  Normally I don't do them simply because I can never remember to keep them... hence, why bother?  But this year, I thought I would give it a chance.  However, I'm going to do this my way.  So instead of just one resolution, I have a short list of items I would like to work on this year.

1 - Write more often
2 - Drink less soda / more water
3 - Get a decent amount of sleep each night
4 - Do that work out thing
5 - De-clutter the house

This day also marks the beginning of the Winter 2015 term of the Harry Potter Knit/Crochet House Cup.  Happily I have been sorted once again to the Noble House of Slytherin.  I've already made the decision to do another non-crazy term.  No Advanced Studies.  At least one class a month which is the minimum requirement.  Of course I can't resist doing all of the Quidditch since I am once again honoured to be a Quidditch Coach.

Crafting goals include:
1 - use as much stash yarn as possible
2 - sewing projects that can fit into class prompts
3 - spinning
4 - work on weaving skills

I've also been considering selling hand made items via Etsy.  I just haven't decided on what I want to sell.  There have been ideas about project bags, cowls, stuffed items, beaded items.  I have a small list started.  The fun part comes with pricing items.  How do you come up with a price on a hand made item.  Not only does the price of the materials have to be counted but the time involved in making the item.  Those who don't actually make crafts sometimes don't understand why hand made items cost more.  It doesn't help that similar items can be found at the big box stores at lower prices.  But thankfully, there are still some who think that hand made items are worth the extra cost.

So that's all I got for now.  Hopefully I can keep up the writing.  Have a great start to the new year y'all!

Chicken, Pom Poms, and Crew Chiefs

Chicken, pom poms, and Crew Chiefs... three things that don't seem to have anything in common. But in this case, there is a connection.  The one type of recipe that I am always looking for is good chicken recipes.  So when a particular mischievous friend of mine made a suggestion, of course I had to try it.  The mischievous one is pretty reliable when it comes to good suggestions.  It was called cinnamon chicken.  I had never heard of it but I was willing to give it a try.

I did a quick search and discovered this version.  It was fairly simple to make and came out juicy and flavourful.  So it is a definite keeper for the recipe file. The blog it came from is called The Kitchen Life of a Navy Wife.  So far I have seen some pretty good recipes in it that will need to be tried.  Sadly it didn't occur to me to take a picture of the chicken once complete... a fact that was pointed out by the mischievous one.  I tried to do the "sad puppy dog look" but... it was a failure.  Apparently the "sad puppy dog" look doesn't work on him.  Oh well.  I'll try to remember to take pictures next time.

Now on to the pom poms...  This goes back to a hat that I was knitting at the moment.  It was inspired by a certain Wolfe Boy aka Paul Wolfe, the Crew Chief of the #2 Miller Lite team.  I mentioned that I was making the pom pom for the top of it and that very same mischievous one may have mentioned a fondness for pompoms... especially with cheerleaders.  So of course I had to see what I could do to get my hands on a set of pom poms.  This turned out easier than I thought.  Of course the colour of the pom poms came into question and I went with Royal Blue as it was my high school colour.

A few days after that, I had in my position the perfect colour of pom poms that both Crew Chiefs would approve.  The colour wouldn't show any favoritism towards either and there was less chance to make one of them sad.  A sad Crew Chief would not be a good thing.  One of them has the most heartbreaking sad puppy dog look that makes me want to give him whatever he wanted just to get him to smile.  The other one has a lost puppy dog look that makes me want to protect him from the big bad world.  Yeah, I'm weird.  It's part of my charm.

Order of the Phoenix - Winter 2013

So here are the notes of the mission in its entirety...

January 2nd

“Good morning sleeping beauty.” The Crew Chief tried to gently wake up the sleeping witch knowing that she can get really cranky first thing in the morning. “I brought coffee.”

“It’s too early.” The sleeping figure just rolled over and growled. “Wait… what time is it?”

“It’s 8 in the morning… so wake up sleepy head and drink your coffee.”

She growled one more time before finally sitting up and accepting the coffee. “Have you seen Jeff around lately? I didn't see him yesterday and then got caught up in the whole beginning-of-term fun.”

“He mentioned something about a trip to Charlotte.”

“Charlotte, North Carolina? That boy’s timing needs some work. The new term has barely begun and he has already run off.” She sighed to her self and took another sip of coffee. “So what’s on the schedule for today?”

“That would be class projects.”

“What about the Order request planning?”

“Ummmm….” The Crew Chief just gave her a look and tried to figure out what to say next. ”I’m under strict orders not to plan anything for the Order project.”

“What?!? Are you kidding me? I thought he got over the whole Dark Forest incident.”

“Well, apparently not.”

“Oh for crying out loud. Did he mention when he was coming back?”

“Not to me.”

“Well then… his little Virginia rear end better be back in time or I will plan one without him. But until then… we look at class prompts.”

January 5th

The Crew Chief stood there in the common room and looked through his notes for the current term. Who knew knitting and crocheting required so much planning? It almost reminded him of all the planning he had to put in during the Nascar season. He took a look around the common room to locate his little witch… well Burton’s little witch but Burton wasn't here at the moment so he considered her to be all his until the return of that race car driver. He was just about to walk over to her when he felt a slight tug at his pants. Standing right in front of him was a house elf clutching what looked like a letter.

“Yes?” He gave the house elf a polite but questioning look.

“Excuse me, Mr. Knaus, but I have a letter for Ms. Girly and I was wondering…” The house elf looked a bit nervous.

“You were wondering if I would deliver if for you?” The house elf nodded his head up and down. “I don’t blame you for not wanting to go near her right now. She’s been a bit cranky these past few days. Of course I will deliver it for you. I can handle her cranky moods.”

“Oh, thank you!” The house elf handed the letter over to the Crew Chief and ran off in a cheery mood.

“Hey sweet cheeks…”

She just sighed at him and gave him a “what now????” look.

“Don’t be so grumpy. He’s only been gone a few days and just think we got to spend lots of time together.” He flashed her that boyish grin that he knows works so well. “Don’t make me tickle you.”

She flashed a tiny smile.

“Well, it’s a start. Oh and this letter is for you. One of the house elves gave it to me… too scared to come deliver in person no doubt… can’t imagine why.”

“Give me that… little turd. Have a seat.” She pointed to a spot next to her and then curled up next to him. “Hey, it’s from Jeff. I’m not even going to ask how he managed to pull this one off.”

Girly,

I have the most amazing idea for your Order project this term. I was checking out my new car for the upcoming season and the idea just popped into my head. It did take me a few days to get the colors needed for this project so I hope Knaus didn’t drive you too crazy in my absence. We both know how he can get when he gets in planning mode.

“What?!? What’s he trying to imply?!?” Chad asked with a slight annoyance in his voice.

“Simply that you have a tendency to get really intense when in ‘planning mode’ and we both know that it is true.”

The Crew Chief just growled in response.

“Don’t growl… that’s my job.”

I have picked up enough fingering weight yarn in colors inspired by my race car. You should be able to recognize the colors assuming Knaus hasn't blinded you with those Lowe's colors.

Chad just mumbled to himself… “Nothing wrong with those Lowe's colors…” Girly just ignored the getting-more-agitated-by-the-moment Crew Chief and continued reading.

Now let me make this perfectly clear missy. You will NOT be going into the Dark Forest this term. No, it is not up for negotiation. Don’t think I’ve forgotten that whole incident from last term. I want you safe this term. I will see you tomorrow and we can plan out what you are doing for the Order this term. By the time I get back you should already have some idea of what the missions are going to be like. So be ready to talk about them and I may even let Knaus help.

Until then…

Jeff

“I wonder which paint scheme he is talking about… hmmm… now I am kinda curious about what he is planning.”

“Pfffttt… still nothing wrong with those Lowe's colors”, replied a very grumpy Chad.

She looked at the highly agitated Crew Chief and smiled. “Don’t be so grumpy. That’s my job too.”

January 7th

Chad Knaus was extremely flustered… and annoyed. He was annoyed because a certain race car driver was a day late in returning which left his little witch in a very depressed mood. He was flustered because he had yet to find a way to cheer her up. And at the moment he was having a very difficult time trying to convince her to go to sleep since she had managed to pick up a cold from somewhere.

“But I’m not tired.” She informed him in a very pouty voice that did not convince him one little bit.

“Well, lay down anyway and get comfy. I’ll sit here with you.”

“But what if I fall asleep before Jeff gets back?”

“Then I’ll wake you up… now shush.”

“Okay…” she replied in a sleepy voice. Moments later she was fast asleep. The minutes passed by as he silently watched her sleep. That boy better have a good reason on why he is so late returning. Chad really didn't like seeing her in such a condition. A few more moments passed and he heard the door opening quietly behind him. He just sighed to himself before turning around to see Jeff entering the bedchambers. Jeff quietly closed the door behind him and placed a small bag on the nearby night stand. Stay calm, Chad… he thought to himself. Now is not the time to start yelling since she was sleeping peacefully.

He walked over to the race car driver and amazed himself at how calm he was staying. “You are late.”

“I know I said I’d be here yesterday but I had another idea and it took me longer than I thought…” Jeff paused for a moment but before he could continue he was interrupted.

“I don’t want to hear it. That poor girl has been highly upset these past two days and it is all your fault. Plus she has also managed to catch a cold so I am NOT waking her up right now. So you better be ready to apologize to her in the morning.”

“Alright… alright… I get it. I screwed up.” Dang, someone has got his panties in a wad, Jeff thought to himself. He just glanced over at the sleeping witch and wanted to wake her up but was smart enough to realize that Knaus was not in the mood to be messed with. So he just waited patiently for the Crew Chief to continue.

“And as far as her Order mission is concerned. How dare you tell her what she can and can not do. You are NOT the boss of her. She wants to go undercover at Hogsmeade so I suggest you agree to whatever store she has picked out… something about a sporting goods store.”

“Fine… fine… I’ll agree to whatever she has picked out. Anything else I should know?”

“One last thing… there is NOTHING wrong with those Lowe's colors.”

BROOM

Mission Division: Security Operations: Open your ears in Hogsmeade

Dear Mission Chief GazeboGal:

I have come across a most awesome shop in Hogsmeade. It is a named Spintwitches and apparently sells sporting goods. This shop would be perfect for me to catch any rumours that may be flying around. Nobody should question why I am working in this particular store since it is a well known fact that I adore the muggle sport of car racing. The Race Car Driver has given me some lovely fingering weight yarn in colours that have been inspired by one of his race cars. I intend to use at least 800 yards to produce a scarf and a coordinating pair of fingerless mitts. And the best part about it… he was totally on board with my idea. ::lets out a totally un-Slytherin squee::

I shall wait patiently for your reply.  Until then... GirlyWithATwist

“Chad… Are you awake?” Girly whispered in the darkness to get her crew chief’s attention.

“Yes… what about Burton? Are you sure he isn't going to wake up?”

“Of course I’m sure. Are you doubting my potion making skills? He won’t be waking up until the morning. Now come on… we can talk somewhere else.” She started to move silently through the bedchambers to the door motioning for Chad to follow her. The two slipped out of the room and into the Slytherin common room. She looked around the room until she found what she was looking for… a quiet spot to talk.

The two got cozy on a rather larger pillow on the floor and Chad pulled out the binder for her to write down notes for her mission report.

“I can’t believe you practically drugged Burton.”

“It was just a simple sleeping potion. Honestly Chad, it won’t hurt him. Besides he needed a good night’s sleep anyway. I still don’t know how you manage to thrive on so little sleep Mr. ‘I've seen 6:48 three times so far and haven’t been to sleep yet’.” She just shook her head at the Crew Chief.

“I drink lots of coffee. Now start your notes. We don’t have all night.”

A few moments passed as she frantically wrote what she had overheard at the sporting goods store in Hogsmeade. Wolves… actual wolves or animangi?!?!? Now that was the question.

“Wait… wolves?”

“Yeah, it was a bit weird. At first I thought maybe they were just talking about sports mascots but then they would get all nervous and look around to see if anyone was listening. And that would be just plain silly if it was something as innocent as a sports mascot.” She paused for a few seconds before continuing. “It would be the perfect animal to use since people are normally a little scared to go near a wolf. So no one would get close enough to see if it was just an actual animal. They could just stay in the shadows and listen. Wolves do have a really good sense of hearing.”

Chad just shook his head in response and placed his head on her lap. “Sooooo….”, said a sleepy voice… “Did you finish those items with the yarn Burton brought over for you.”

“Yes, yes I did and they both came out totally awesome!!! I made the scarf a little longer than the pattern called for which was a good idea since I barely got over the minimum yardage I proposed of 800 yards… I ended up using about 808.5 yards. And the mitts fit!!! I think the checkered flag buttons were a nice touch.”

“That’s nice… still think they would have looked good in Lowe's colors.” It didn't take long and soon she had a sleeping crew chief using her lap as a pillow.

Silly boy… looks like that lack of sleep has finally caught up. She just sat there in silence working on her notes while stroking his hair. But not even that could keep the haunting image out of her head… that of a light grey wolf with striking blue eyes staring right at her like it knew her.

Just Don't Settle

Life Advice from Chad Knaus:
You know, just don't settle. I fear the fact that one day, we'll never win a race again. I fear the fact that one day I won't work with Jimmie again. I fear the fact that one day, I won't have this amazing facility at Hendrick Motorsports to work in. And I try to work as hard as I can every single day to go out there and win races, because I know at some point in time, it's going to go away. And you just can't take anything for granted.

Tea, Scones, and Snogging

Location: Slytherin Dungeons
Nighttime had settled over Hogwarts castle and the normally busy Slytherin common room was strangely empty for a Friday night. The exception to this was the one witch who sat all alone on one of the plush green sofas that decorated the common room. All she could do was sit there in silence and stare at the ground in front of her.
The race car driver standing nearby wasn't quite sure what to do with her. He just watched her in silence with a concerned look on his face. There was sadness in her large brown eyes and he could tell that she had been fighting off tears most of the day. The only thing he was sure of was that he didn't like seeing his little witch look so lost. Moments passed and the only idea that entered his mind was that a change of scenery might do her some good. I can’t believe that I am about to do this. But he couldn't stand to see her looking so sad. If that meant a trip to see a certain crew chief in North Carolina, then he was willing to take that risk.
“So what are you planning to do this weekend?” He quietly asked her as he made himself comfortable on the sofa next to her. He pulled her closer and wrapped his arms around her giving her a gentle squeeze. She offered very little resistance but made herself comfortable in his lap and rested her head on his chest.
“Honestly, I have no idea.” She just sat there and clinched her teeth and he knew that she was doing her very best not to cry in front of him.
“Well, in that case. I have one for you.”
She just looked at him with a confused expression on her face. “Like what?”
“I was thinking a trip to see Knaus over in North Carolina. I’m sure he wouldn't mind a visit since he keeps asking about you at each race.”
“Seriously?!?” She didn't quite know what to say. “You want me to go visit another guy? But what happens if… uhhh….” She could feel her checks start to turn red.
“What happens if you kiss him again?” Before she could respond he kept going. “Yeah, I kinda figured something happened between you two when I saw how he was looking at you. It was pretty obvious.”
“Oh….” All she could do was turn a brighter shade of red as she thought of the kisses she had shared with Chad outside of Hendrick Motorsports. “I didn't mean for it to happen. It just happened.” She looked back at him with a questioning look on her face. “I don’t understand. If you knew we kissed then why do you want me to go back there to visit him?”
“It’s simple really. You need a change of pace. I can tell that it’s driving you batty just to sit around with nothing major to plan. So I figured a visit to North Carolina might do you some good.”
“You are completely amazing!!!” She was so excited that she threw her arms around him and hugged him with all of her might.
“What? All I get is a hug?” He said in mocked annoyance. “I practically throw you at another guy…”
“You are such a turd.” She playfully stuck her tongue out at him.
“So tell me something. Who kisses better? Me or him?” Jeff looked at her with an amused expression on his face.
“Seriously Jeff, I am not comparing your kissing techniques.”
He just sighed and tried to look annoyed. “Fine. Then you go get ready and I’ll go find that Doctor guy.”
“What for? I can just apparate to North Carolina.”
“Yeah, I would prefer he drop you off in the Tardis. That way there is less chance of your aim being off and you landing in the middle of New York City. I know how crazy your powers get when you are emotional. Now get moving before I change my mind.”
She could tell that Jeff had clearly made up his mind and knew it would be futile to even attempt to change it. “Fine, fine. I’m going… You can be so bossy at times.”
He just chuckled to himself as she walked off to get ready. Dang, I hope that this doesn't bite me in the ass.
Location: Hendrick Motorsports near Charlotte Motor Speedway
There were clear blue skies over Hendrick Motorsports and Chad Knaus tried to shield his hazel eyes as he scanned the sky over the complex. He wasn't even sure what he was looking for but that didn't stop him from looking. It had seemed like forever since his life was interrupted by the first and only witch he had ever met. He was also sure that Jeff Burton was tired of answering his endless questions of when she would come by for another visit.
“Chad, what are you doing out here?” Jimmie Johnson gave his crew chief a concerned look.
“I’m just getting some fresh air, Jimmie.”
“Yeah, okay. So are you coming by the house tomorrow? Chani was wondering if she should expect you.”
“Uh, I've got some stuff I have to take care of…” Well, I hope I do…
“Alrighty. I’ll talk with you later then.”
The day passed and twilight soon set. A slight breeze filled the air and Chad soon found that he was the only person still at the shop. He glanced at his watch and wondered how much longer he should wait. He took one last look around before starting to head back inside the shop. The disappointment on his face was clear to anyone who would have seen him but there was no one there but him. And just when he had almost given up hope for a miracle that night he heard a familiar sound in the distance.
Vroomp Vroomp
He raced towards where the sound was coming from and came to a grinding halt when he saw it. It was that blue box again. The last time he saw it was when she had left but she promised that she would come to visit again. This time he hoped that the blue box would be bringing her back for a visit so he waited impatiently for the door to open.
“Chad!!!!” A high pitched squeal hit his ears and he found himself almost knocked to the ground by his favorite witch. Well, to be fair, she was the only witch he had ever met so that automatically made her his favorite. She squeezed her arms around him tight. “It’s so good to see you again!!! Did you miss me?”
“Of course I did. But I’m sure Burton told you that already.” He squeezed her back and buried his face in her neck.
“Yeah, he did mention that you asked about me once or twice.”
Jeff cleared his throat to get their attention. “Once or twice? Try like every week since the last time you were here.” Instead of letting her go, Chad just turned her around so she was facing Jeff but he kept his arms wrapped securely around her waist as if he was afraid she would disappear if he let her go. He was in no hurry to let go anytime soon and not even glares from Jeff Burton could change that fact.
Jeff just sighed when he realized that Chad was not letting go. Whatever, she’ll be coming back with me anyway Knaus. “Okay. So here is the deal. She is visiting for the weekend. The Doctor and I will be back for her Sunday evening at this spot. You will make sure to have her here no later than 10 pm local time. Got it Knaus?”
Chad just calmly shook his head. “Got it. Not a problem.” Inwardly he was thrilled. After waiting for what seemed like an eternity, he was finally going to be able to spend some time alone with her without worrying about her getting in trouble.
“Now that we got that settled.” Jeff looked back at his witch who was still wrapped up in the crew chief’s arms but it looked like she didn't mind one little bit. “And you missy, try to remember to be careful with your magic. We don’t need any trouble, alright.”
She smiled and shook her head in agreement. “Got it.”
He looked relived and for a moment was beginning to doubt his idea of bringing up the idea of this visit. “Good. Now come give me a kiss so the Doctor can take me back to the Dungeons.”
Chad reluctantly let her go and tried not to look too disappointed as he watched Jeff wrap her up in his arms and kiss her for what seemed like an eternity to Chad.
“Anything happens to her and I am coming after you, got it Knaus?”
Chad recognized that “don’t mess with me” look that Jeff was giving him and just responded with one word… “Yep.” Even he knew that Jeff Burton was not someone to piss off and doing so might prevent future visits from happening.
“Alright. So I will see y’all this Sunday.” He took one last look at the both of them before returning to the Tardis and closing the door behind him. Moments later it was gone leaving Chad and Girly alone in the dark.
Chad just flashed a boyish grin at her and was overjoyed at that fact that he had her to himself for the weekend. “So what do you want to do now?”
“I’m sure we can figure something out.” She opened the small bag she was carrying and pulled out a broomstick. She looked up at him with a mischievous grin on her face. “So tell me Chad, have you ever ridden on a broomstick before?”

From Colorado to North Carolina...

Greetings from Mooresville, North Carolina!  We have lived here for about 4 months now and I am  still giddy over the fact that I am fina...
