Sock Summit Part III

The only highlight of saturday at Sock Summit was the fact that I drove to the Oregon Convention Center by myself through downtown Portland for the first time. It went pretty smoothly. I helped Sharon of StitchJones for a short time in the morning before having some lunch. That afternoon I had a stranded colorwork class with Janal Laidman. I still have to finish my little sock from the class. Just haven't had time to sit down and work on it.

I was too tired to go to the Ravlery party at the Forestry Center that night but I heard it was pretty good. There was something about goodie bags... but I needed the sleep more and actually woke up bright and cheerful Sunday morning ready for my continental knitting class and ribbing class with Cookie A. Now I have to make sure that the ribbing on all of my socks flows into the pattern on the leg or it will look just plain wonky.

Sunday was closing ceremonies and it was bitter sweet. It was also the 99th anniversary of Elizabeth Zimmerman's birth. I still think it is pretty funny that Meg Swanson said she was brainwashed into knitting by her mother.

Sock Summit Part II

Today's post about Sock Summit will pretty much cover the first two days. I had my first class on sock design with Star Athena. Yes, that is her real name. She lives here in Portland. All of us in class started a design and I am still working on mine but have been distracted by getting some stuff ready for Oregon Flock & Fiber. More later on that.

So after class that afternoon, the marketplace was open for students and Rachel and I went fangirl on quite a bit of people.

Rachel, me, and the Ravelry gang

The really big swift from Paradise Fibers in Washington state...apparently there were some upset vendors due to the size of it. Don't really know why. It made a good reference point.

Me and Cat Bordhi (at opening reception)

Me and Cookie A. (thanks to Sara)

And here we are trying to break the World Record on the number of knitters knitting in one place. I'm pretty sure we blew the old record out of the water. Sorry, Australia.

We even went fangirl on Cindy. She will be a famous sock designer one day and already has some great stuff out. It was pretty funny since we see her on a weekly basis at knit night.

And here I am in my poodle skirt outfit at Sock Hop. Of course I had to wear hand knit socks. They are a pair of Monkey socks that I received in one of the Monkey swaps I was in last year. If I looked back through the blog I could probably find out where they came from.

ETA: Okay, so I looked and I got the socks back in 2007 from a lady in Vermont. These socks have held up pretty good.

Sock Summit Part I

So I finally have some time to sit down and recap Sock Summit 2009 or "the greatest sock show on the Earth". We will overlook the fact that it may be the only sock show on the Earth. It was still the greatest. It was a fabulous 4 days that started on Aug 5th when I went with Rachel to pick up the registration packet and the swag goodies.

Here is the dragon boat with the registration area nearby. The longest line was for people whose last names ended with "A to H". So that is the line I was in.

Rachel and I totally went fangirl on Judy Becker. She created the "Judy's Magic Cast On" when she was sick at home. And this cast on can be used for other things besides socks.

Before we headed home, we stopped at a little restaurant in downtown Portland known as Karam's Restaurant. It serves Lebanese cuisine and I had actually never been there. Since I live in Hillsboro, I really don't have many opportunities to go to downtown Portland. The meal I picked for my first one was the Lamb Awarma (Ground spiced lamb mixed with parsley and onions served on hummus) and a Rose Water Lebanese Soda that was quite refreshing. The hummus was creamier than the hummus I usually buy from the store.

And here is my swag package. The beer glass was for The Chief. I absolutely love that bag as it can hold quite a bit of yarn and all of the pockets come in very handy.
