Potions Homework II - HLBOE Swap

1. Name the two known Potions professors at Hogwarts during the books. Include which book(s) each of them were professors during.
Professor Severus Snape - Books 1 to 5
Professor Horace Slughorn - Books 6 & 7

2. Name the five pieces of equipment that a student of Potions is expected to have.
Cauldron, knife, mortar and pestle, potion making kit and brass scales

3. Give me the name and the person who invented the potion that is used as a remedy for the common cold.
The Pepperup Potion - invented by Glover Hipworth

4. What does the Polyjuice potion do? Name at least four of the ingredients. Tell me at least two of the characters who used this potion in the books and tell me what it did to them.
Polyjuice Potion is used to transform a person into the excact likeness of another. It is made with lacewing flies, leeches, powdered bicon horn, knotgrass, fluxweed, shredded boomslang skin, and a bit of the person being transformed into. Barty Crouch Jr. used the potion to transform into his mother so he could escape from Azkaban prison. Harry Potter and Ron Weasley both used it to turn into Slytherin students to sneak into the Snake Pit and talk with Draco Malfoy about the Heir of Slytherin. (sneaky gits)

5. What is a bezoar and what is it used for?
A bezoar is rare, kidney shaped stone which can be found only in the stomach of a goat. It acts as an antidote to most poisons.

6. Tell me what the Amorentia potion is. What would yours smell like?
Amorentia is the most powerful love potion in the world. Mine would be a mixture of lavender, parchment, and daffodils.

7. Name three Potions ingredients that can be found in the Muggle world. What are each of these items used for in each situation? How to Muggles and Wizards use these things differently?
Moonstone - used in various potions including Draught of Peace. Muggles use it in jewelry.
Ginger Root - Cut ginger roots are used in a wit-sharpening potion. The muggles use it in cooking.
Daisy - chopped daisy roots are used in a Shrinking Solution. In North America, the common daisy is often considered a weed.

8. What is your favorite Potion and why?
That would be a bruise-healing paste because I am such a clutz.

9. There are at least two Potions which are mentioned as being illegal to the students at Hogwarts, but they get used in the series. Which two are these and what do they do?
Felix Felicis potion -makes the drinker very lucky and is a banned substance in sporting events, examinations, and elections
Amortentia potion - the most powerful love potion that causes the drinker to have a powerful infacuation or obsession with someone.

10. Name the three ingredients in the Draught of the Living Death. In what year do the Hogwarts students brew this potion?
The Draught of the Living Death is composed of an asphodel of wormwood, valerian roots, and a single Sopophorous Bean. The Hogwarts students brew it in the 6th year (Half-Blood Prince).

11. We all know that Remus Lupin is a werewolf. During his time teaching at Hogwarts, Snape makes him the wolfsbane potion to counteract some of these nasty effects. There is one ingredient which Lupin says will render the effects useless. What is this ingredient and why is it important?
Adding sugar to the wolfsbane potion will render it useless even though it would probably make it taste better. Wolfsbane potion tastes really nasty.
